Could you afford a comfortable retirement?

ASFA's latest figures put a comfortable retirement at $78,998 a year for a homeowner couple and $56,166 for a single.

New Figures Are in from the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA)

The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA) has released its latest Retirement Standard, showing the estimated income Australians now need to maintain a comfortable lifestyle after they stop working.

ASFA is the peak policy, research and advocacy body for Australia's superannuation industry. Its ASFA Retirement Standard, first introduced in 2004, is widely used as a benchmark for estimating how much singles and couples may need to fund different lifestyles in retirement.

According to the latest June quarter 2026 figures, a homeowner couple aged 65–84 now needs an estimated $78,998 a year to fund what ASFA defines as a comfortable retirement, while a single homeowner needs approximately $56,166 a year.

ASFA's current estimated super balance required at age 67 to support a comfortable retirement is $730,000 for a couple and $630,000 for a single person, based on its stated assumptions.

But here's the important part: these figures are benchmarks, not your personal retirement number.

You may want to travel more frequently, retire earlier, help your children or grandchildren, upgrade your home or simply have more money available to enjoy your retirement.

Alternatively, you may own your home outright, have investments outside super or be comfortable living on considerably less.

So rather than simply asking “How much super should I have?”, there's a much more useful question to consider: “How much will I need for the retirement I actually want?”

Knowing what the average Australian may need is useful. Knowing what you may need is far more valuable.
